Sorry but I really have to say Valentine's day, in the long long history of modern human being, has created countless wars between men and women (or men&men; women&women, whatever).

Men say this valentine thing is WAY TOO COMMERCIAL, totally not worth celebrating.
Women say if you don't bring me flowers and gifts, you don't love me.

*Note: I'm not trying to generalize all situations here, I'm simply referring to most cases I've heard or experienced over the years.

A very typical conversation:
Woman: Valentine's Day is coming next week, I'm so happy. How are you gonna celebrate it this year?
Man: Celebrate? Didn't I buy flowers last year? And the year before last, remember? The dinner that cost me 5 grands?
Woman: Then why not this year?
Man: There's nothing to celebrate. Every single day we spend together counts far more than this meaningless, over-commercialized Valentine thing, don't you think?
Woman: WHAT? ARE YOU SAYING OUR LOVE IS MEANINGLESS? HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT?
Man: Come on, I didn't say that, you make up the story yourself. All I'm trying to say is that I love you, and I don't think it a good idea to spend lots of money on expensive bouquet or a pricey candle lit dinner, especially on that day, things tend to cost much more.
Woman: So it's all about the money. Then why you bought me beautiful flowers and took me to fancy restaurants when you asked me out on dates, if you hate it this much?
Man: It's not about the money. It's...
Woman: What?
Man: It's...ah...whatever, I don't care. I'm not gonna celebrate this stupid lover's day this year. Celebrating this day doesn't help our love grow deeper; in fact the only thing that grows deeper are those wicked merchants' pockets!
Woman: All I ever wanted is some extra love and care. Valentine doesn't come every day, it's once a year. I'm so depressed. Is it so hard for you just to give me what I cared about?
Man: Honey, you know me, it's not that I don't care about you...
Woman: Then take me to that newly opened fancy restaurant right around the street corner.
Man: It's stupid, asking me to prove my love for you by going to some fancy place.
Woman: No it's not, it's a perfect proof that you love me and you are willing to please me.
Man: ...........

Man and woman both get so depressed.
-----------

From a man's point of view, this lover's day sucks.
From a woman's point of view, this lover's day sucks, IF her female friends get flowers and are treated to romantic candle lit dinner but not herself.

--------

Well, to end this endless war, I think this word ranks true.
"Please, and be pleased."
